Wesley Henderson is currently an associate professor at Hampton University, teaching history of
architecture survey courses and fifth-year studio design. He earned a doctoral degree in the history
of architecture at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1992. His thesis explored the
careers of two African American architects that practiced in that city between 1890 and 1960. While
a student at UCLA, Henderson was trained to do oral history, and recorded approximately 40 hours of
interviews with 5 contemporary African American architects in that city. He was assistant editor for the
book African American Architects: A Biographical Dictionary 1865-1945, which was published in 2004.
He worked extensively with many contributing authors and wrote 15 of the 120 entries. Henderson is
a licensed architect, a member of the American Institute of Architects and the National Organization of
Minority Architects, a seasoned historical researcher, and has been a collegiate instructor for 30 years.
